The term instrument fits a very broad range of equipment that can span everything from engine gauges to digital depth sounders. In marine electronics we generally use the term to indicate stand-alone digital information displays for depth, speed, wind and surface water temperature. Today, that definition has been blurred with the ability to incorporate individual instruments into networked marine systems. It is not uncommon for a boat to have a separate digital depth gauge that is tied-in to the network system and getting its depth reading from a black box fishfinder. Due to this change we have generally listed products in the Instrument Section in family groups.
There are a couple of other areas where we have listed equipment differently. The overwhelming number of GPS chartplotters have pretty much rendered the traditional GPS unit obsolete. We have chosen to list the few remaining units as GPS instruments. Additionally, in this section we have included fuel flow instruments, compasses (both electronic sensors and traditional) and the new AIS (Automatic Identification System - see Marine Navigation) receivers.
